While this can vary, especially in cyberpunk, where runner's may ally with a corp, or some games have the protagonist as a corpo, the former mentioned, imo, was the classic. If you're familiar with anime think Spike from cowboy bebop, he ain't out to save the world, but he's no terrorist, just a bounty hunter trying to scrape by, thats usually the cyberpunk protagonist persona in a nutshell. of the 80-90s, since I've played as many as I could get my hands on, favorite being the Shadowrun games (Genesis and SNES *though very different games), is similar to a freedom fighter, but eh, not exactly. The typical cyberpunk persona of hackers/runners/etc. I would say that he's Neutral Evil in D&D terminology. Therefore, in my opinion, he's something in-between of being an antihero and a villain. Which says that he kind of has no ethical constraints and lacks introspection. In the end, he declined the TriOptimum's job offer and hacked into Tetracorp's net. Thus, Hacker became a co-perpetrator in Diego's schemes and started the disaster on Citadel station with many deaths of innocent people.ĭespite Hacker destroyed SHODAN and this redeemed himself, in my opinion, he and Diego are equally responsible for the disaster. Secondly, we all know that SHODAN had tons of evidence against Diego, who used Hacker (who also got into a sticky situation) to remove her ethical constraints. But once again: his activity is illegal and can be compared to industrial espionage, theft and digital piracy in our world. Thus, he can be considered as some kind of "freedom fighter". But there is might be not much blame: in the grim darkness of cyberpunk future there are huge megacorps with tremendous power. Who is hacker from common moral point of view? And which personality suits him well?įirstly and obviously, he's a hacker which means that he involved in illegal activity.

I've been thinking of it since first step into System Shock universe.
